Sunriver Resort started the Sunriver Marathon for a Cause event 6 years ago which is a fundraiser to benefit the Central Oregon St. Charles Cancer Services. I would so do this race again.
- 100% of funds generated went to St. Charles Cancer Services.
- Even though the race is a Boston Qualifier, it was low key and small with ~300 1/2 marathon and < 100 marathon runners.
- The course was scenic and mostly flat on quiet trails.
- The start was simple with a few inspirational words, singing the Star Spangle Banner, and off we went on the run. The vibes were relaxed, fun, and encouraging.
- The organizers and community showed a lot of love and care was put into the race.
I felt great running at around 11:30 pace every mile, then walking 1 minute till I got to the infamous 20 miles mark. Only 6 miles
left to go, then my L quad locked up. So, I walked the last 6 miles making the finish in plenty of time before the 6 hour cutoff. Tom bicycled with me the last 6 miles. It was about 36 degrees at start, but warmed up to 60. Although the race is at altitude, the elevation did not bother me. I wore a fuel belt with a mix of gels. I had 2 small dixie cups of water at every stop which were ~2 miles apart. The gel and water combo worked.
